Well Done Stacey Abrams

A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Stacey Abrams is an American hero, a trail blazer who lifted a whole generation and changed the trajectory of politics in Georgia and across the Deep South – and beyond.

Today, the Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate may have abandoned her quest to become the country’s first African American woman governor. But she will not end her crusade for justice and fair and honest elections.

While declaring that under the current election rules and suppression schemes she saw no path to victory, Abrams refused to concede. She said to do so would be to acknowledge and affirm the structure of the election process and the administration of the race were fair and run efficiently.

It most certainly was not

Her Republican opponent, Georgia Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, was the scorekeeper, referee and instant replay judge of the election. Former President Jimmy Carter said it was an unfair advantage and Kemp should resign as Secretary of State. Kemp refused to resign until after Election Day.

Abrams said she and her allies will be filing a major federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia for the “gross mismanagement of this election and to protect future elections."

She should have the support of everyone who cares about electoral integrity.

Abrams is to be commended on many counts: she ran a dignified campaign on the moral high ground against a candidate who used race-baiting to win; she ran a grassroots campaign on the issues that affect real peoples’ lives; she massively increased voter registration and turnout and she allowed many down-ballot candidates to win.

Well done, Stacey Abrams.  Your future is bright.
