We the People Must Act to Stop the Carnage

A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

CHICAGO – We join the world in shock, grief and condemnation of the slaughter of 49 people in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families and their country.

Yet, as was so painfully clear after 17 people were killed in the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, after the massacre of 26 people in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, after 9 people were gun downed during Bible study at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, after 11 worshipers were murdered in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, after another bloody summertime weekend in Chicago, thoughts and prayers are not enough.

We the people must act to stop the carnage and the terrorism. We must march. We must vote. We must demand that our elected leaders enact sensible and sweeping gun control measures, that they pour resources into mental health treatment, that they end their rhetoric of immigrant bashing and religious intolerance, that they stop making veiled threats of violence by their supporters, that they build bridges of understanding, not walls of fear and ignorance.

In the meantime, we the people must light the way through the darkness. We must turn to each other, not on each other. We must choose futures over funerals, hope over despair, reconciliation over vengeance, love over hate.
