New Year’s Day Celebration of American Freedom

Spend part of your New Year’s Day with a group of gifted young African American orators, national civil rights leaders, musicians and Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition (RPC) celebrates a foundation of American democracy and freedom: the Emancipation Proclamation

Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019

10 AM – 12 PM

Rainbow PUSH Coalition National Headquarters

930 E. 50th Street

Chicago, IL

Jan. 1 is Emancipation Day. On New Year’s Day 1863, President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – “the most consequential executive order in the history of the United States” – went into effect, and millions of slaves across the South were legally freed after nearly 250 years in bondage.

This 2019 Emancipation Day celebration, with food, music and song, will have added significance. It will kick off a year-long series of events at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Chicago and in cities across the country, commemorating the 400thanniversary of the first documented forced arrival of African slaves to the shores of what would become the United States of America, and the African American journey from the auction block to the White House.

The Emancipation Day event will feature students from RPC’s award-winning, nationally renowned PUSH for Excellence oratorical and educational program. The students will perform a dramatic reading of the proclamation.

Cable television news host and civil rights legend, Rev. Al Sharpton, Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, and former NAACP head and Silicon Valley, social impact entrepreneur, Ben Jealous, will contribute remarks.

“The Emancipation Proclamation is the most consequential executive order in the history of the United States," Rev. Jackson said. "For every American who cherishes freedom and democracy, New Year’s Day should mean far more than college bowl games and parades. The nation must revive and reclaim the true meaning and significance of Jan. 1 – Emancipation Day.”
