MORE DEMOCRACY THE WAY OUT OF CURRENT CRISIS
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
In a time of darkness and fear, former President Barack Obama gave a speech Friday full of light and hope. In his first comprehensive direct confrontation of our current political crisis, Obama turned to average citizens, ordinary Americans as the frontline defenders of our democracy.
As Obama told an audience of students and political leaders at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, we are at a pivotal moment in our history. The politics of fear, ignorance and resentment threaten to undermine our democracy and the progress of the last 50 years.
But We the People have the power to correct this crooked course and change its downward direction if we turn out on Nov. 6 and vote our numbers, our hopes and our dreams in what Obama rightly called the most important election in recent memory.
I listened to Obama Friday with a sense of pride and melancholy, nodding in agreement throughout his timely and terrific speech.
The politics of fear, Obama said, “did not start with Donald Trump, he is a symptom, not the cause.”
“We’re Americans,” Obama added. “We’re supposed to stand up to bullies. Not follow them.”
There's a battle for the soul of America. Between the forces of Obama and Trump, Obama is on the right side of history. He fights for health care and workers, for inclusion, hope and healing. He fights for us.
