Mayoral Candidates Preckwinkle and Lightfoot Agree to Come Together in Spirit of “Healing and Reconciliation” After Election

In the spirit of “healing and reconciliation” Chicago mayoral candidates Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle signed an agreement Saturday during the Rainbow PUSH Coalition weekly community and broadcast to hold a joint unity news conference the day after the April 2 election.

The signing of the agreement – a “memorandum of commitment” – was brokered by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. and witnessed by civil rights legend Rev. Al Sharpton and hundreds of onlookers in the coalition’s packed auditorium.

“The race was competitive and often divisive,” Rev. Jackson said. “The race ends Tuesday. The healing must begin Wednesday morning.”

MEMORANDUM OF COMMITMENT

BY & BETWEEN

PRESIDENT TONI PRECKWINKLE & ATTORNEY LORI LIGHTFOOT

March 30, 2019

This letter is signed by both of us in our respective positions as Chicago mayoral candidates for the election, April 2, 2019.

Whereas our task in running for office is done, we realize as leaders we must show Chicago and the nation how we can win with grace and lose with dignity. In a real sense both of us are winners.

Rev. Jackson has appealed to us to remember those who want healing and reconciliation in the aftermath of this tumultuous election. Neither of us wants to see our city and county in protracted division.

Therefore, we agree to hold a joint press conference Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at 10 a.m. at a site mutually agreeable to both of us.
