LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE
A Statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
I am very concerned about recent developments in the Democratic Republic (DR) of Congo as the country marches towards long overdue elections finally scheduled forDecember 23, 2018.
The recent action by the National Electoral Commission (EC) to ban five key opposition candidates including H.E. Samy Badibanga and Jean-Pierre Bemba is very troubling and seen as a move to weaken the opposition thus strengthening President Kabila’s handpicked successor.
If this stands, it will undermine the electoral process, which is another major setback for a country that has gone through so much political, social and economic crisis during the past decades.
I appeal to the Constitutional Court to show its independence and allow H.E. Badibanga, Bemba and the other candidates to exercise their fundamental democratic rights. The people of DR Congo should be given the chance to choose their leaders and not the EC.
I also appeal to H.E. President Kabila to restore and ensure the security protection of H.E. Badibanga and all the candidates. The world is watching and will not tolerate any harm or violence against the opposition before, during or after the elections. I hope and pray that peace will prevail in DR Congo.
