Congratulations to California Gov. Gavin Newsom for His Wisdom and Political Courage
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
This is the day the Lord has made.
Congratulations to California Gov. Gavin Newsom for his wisdom and political courage for doing the morally right thing by signing an executive order Wednesday imposing a moratorium on executions in his sprawling state.
The government should never play God. Study after study has shown the death penalty to be racially discriminatory. The nation’s death rows are disproportionately populated by African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and the poor.
Capital punishment has always been legalized lynching and must be completely abolished.
Killing someone to show that killing is wrong is morally bankrupt. We are so much better than that.
The risk of executing an innocent person is high. Since 1973, 164 wrongfully convicted men and women have been freed from America’s death rows.
I’m reminded every day of our flawed criminal justice system when my Rainbow PUSH Coalition colleague, Johnnie Savory, comes to work. When Johnnie was a poor, black 14-year-old, he was arrested for a double homicide he did not commit. He spent the next 30 years in prison.
With 737 condemned men and women, California had the largest Death Row in the United States. The 29 other states that still have capital punishment should immediately follow California’s lead. Stop the killing – now.
Elections have consequences. Voting matters and can literally be the difference between life and death. Today, Gov. Newsom demonstrated that as he took a brave and righteous step on the road to a more just state, country and world.
Keep up with Rev. Jackson and the work of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition at www.rainbowpush.org.
